We are an open scout group in Singapore, with cubs and scouts from different backgrounds. We meet every alternate Sunday afternoon to do fun stuff like camp, hike, organize science fairs and performances, learn new skills such as pioneering and outdoor cooking. Most important of all, we have fun! If you are interested to learn more about us, write to us at using the form on the right! We'll be glad to hear from you.

Heritage Trail 17 August
Heritage Trail at Fort Canning
Event: 17 August 2014
Written by: Joshua YIP
On 17 August 2014, it was a humid and warm Sunday. All of us gathered at Fort
Canning Park at 3pm. Most people were on time. I can’t wait for the race to start.
First, we lined up in our SIX at Fort Gate. Then, Uncle Kelvin and Zoya led
the Grand Howl. Then, my dad, Uncle Benny did the briefing. After we got the first
clue, we set off to where our clue asked us to go.
It was an Amazing Race with “Minute-to-Win-It” games
Everyone had to help to solve the riddles. Every stationmaster would tell us about Fort Canning
history and we have to write down in our worksheet. Then, the challenge would begin. I liked the “Junk In the Trunk” game the most.
My team, Stingray, came in First!
The second prize went to Snowy Owl...

and Third was Otter.

I learned about the history of Fort Canning and the history of world war two in Singapore. It was very fun with the worksheets and challenges together!
Scouting can be very interesting and fun.

Fireworks Hike
Fireworks Hike
Date: 26th Jul 2014
Written by: Maximus Ee
Today's event was the Fireworks Hike. We met at Kallang MRT at 3pm. There was a new
boy who joined us for the hike. His name is Yang Pang. When we started out, the weather
was hot and stayed the same until evening.

I was eager to go faster because I felt energetic. On our way, the path which we were
walking on was blocked by some construction. As such, we had to cross to the other side
of the road. We also passed by the new Sports Hub at Kallang. The Sports Hub looks big
while I look tiny, standing beside it. We stopped there to take a water break and took some
group photos. We also passed by Gardens by the Bay East and the younger cubs joined
us from there. We stopped to rest at Marina Barrage. Two teenage girls asked whether we
could take some photographs with them. They also gave some mini Singapore flags to us.

We then walked on to the Helix Bridge and settled at the sitting space which some of the
scouts leaders have reserved for us. After the dinner at Helix Bridge near the Art Science
Museum, we played charades. Charades is basically acting out an action/ animal or thing
without saying a word, for other people to guess. The action of the last card was running
late. Uncle Benny was the one to act it out for us to guess. Just after our game, the people
holding parachutes jumped out from helicopters and appeared from the sky. I thought
they were going to crash into the big National Day Parade screen but they landed safely.
This was followed by a ship that sailed out with two boats following closely behind. The
ship stopped and got ready for the 21 gun salute. I felt that the gun salute was very loud.
One of the boats sailed past us. A friendly officer on the boat waved to us and we happily
waved back.

The fireworks started at 805pm. Some of the fireworks display was that of smiley faces.
The pyrotechnics display had plenty of colourful lights being shot into the sky. I felt that
the fireworks display was more than what I expected. When I was looking at the fireworks,
I didnt expect that there would be any display of smiley faces. To my delight, the display
patterns were magical. When the fireworks ended, Auntie Rebecca gave us some glow
in the dark sticks to keep. We went home after the fireworks display. I felt very happy as I
have hiked more than the expected 7km. We actually hiked 8.5km! I was tired but satisfied
that it was a memorable hike.
I hope the people in charge of the National Day Parade will do a good job on the actual
National Day. I also wish that we will have more of such hikes in future as I have enjoyed
myself thoroughly.

The Condition Hike to Sentosa Island

It was a cloudy day. We gathered at
Harborfront ticketing counter. It looked like it was going to rain and some
adults joked about ending up hiking in the nearby mall. Soon after, everybody arrived.
We grouped into our sixes and filed out of the train station, Six Wolverines in
the lead!
We
walked out into the busy city along the road. We were all excited about the
hike. The monorail to Sentosa was right above us. We walked along the heavy trafficked
roads for a while, heading towards the boardwalk that led to the island of
Sentosa. Once we reached the boardwalk, the strong breeze coming from the sea
hit us. Before that, it felt hot and stuffy. The breeze was a wonderful
feeling. We were off for a wonderful start!
The boardwalk seemed
to last forever, stretching out along the sea. I kind of secretly wished it would
never end. The scenery was breathtaking.
We passed by the
Merlion and Universal Studio. We took some group pictures…just like the
tourists. We walked pass more roads and spotted peacocks on the way. Then we
picked up the younger cubs that were too young to walk the whole distance. They
were so eager to finally join in the hike. We walked up hill for a bit, then
down hill for a bit. Our legs were kind of sore by then.
Then the hike finally
ended. It was 3 hours later. We were all tired by the time we arrived. We all
sat down on the floor having our well-deserved snacks when the leaders broke
the news to us that we had completed more than we expected. All the Cubs were
so happy and proud of themselves! We finished about 7.4 kilometers. Altogether
it was a wonderful hike.
Now, we were all ready
for the FIREWORK HIKE that will take place 2 weeks later.

29 September 2013: Coastal Cleanup
Today, we did coastal clean-up. We mostly picked
up cigarette buds. At the beginning my group kept picking up wood. Jayson’s group found a dead lizard and a dead
frog. The frog was bloated and was about to burst and the intestines were about
to flow out. Everyone except Dad, Ryan Jr.’s
Dad, Jayson and Jeremiah said “Ew!”. My group found a lot of trash, including a
lighter, found by me. Celestine even
said their back car wheel had a diaper next to it. I also found a pizza-box holder. Janelle brought her dog, Caramel.
Before the
walk to where we were supposed to start picking trash, I gave Celestine a pack
of Mix, clip, ‘n’ Zip bracelets. Once,
when we were walking to where we were supposed to start, Celestine dropped the
bracelets I gave her. Javier saw the
pack that dropped from Celestine’s bag.
Seeing that it was a new type of trash, Javier picked it up. Everyone, except Celestine and me thought it
was trash. Wasn’t it lucky Javier picked
it up?
Javier and James kept complaining
about when we could start picking up trash.
Afterwards, we went mad about trash.
Celestine found a watermelon skin and two chicken bones. We had a lot of fun picking up trash. Later, we sat down to eat our snacks. We had to take off our gloves so I threw mine
away. I had Mame monster noodles,
Celestine had chocolate cookies, Javier and James had bananas. Celestine said I always have the best
snacks. Later on, we met the
Scorpions. There was a big hill-ish rock
thing (the breakwater) that everyone except me climbed up.
On the way back Auntie El was talking with
me. Isaac said that his group found a
rusty oil tank full of sea water and a red plush toy snake. My group also found ceramic tiles. Jayson and Jeremiah found two Nerf gun
bullets. One of them was a black velcro
bullet and the other was a purple suction bullet. We collected 10
bags in total, but only 5 made it back to the start point. All in all, 38 kg of
rubbish collected from the beach, consisting of about 620 cigarette butts, lots
and lots of bottles and cans, and well, one or two dead animals.

4 Aug 2013: Country and Culture
At today‘s scout meeting we were sharing about the cultures and traditions of other places.
Leanne shared traditional dances from Italy, Japan, and Israel. The Italian dance was called tarantella, the Japanese dance was Tanko Bushi, and the Israely dance was called the Hora. Leanne got everybody to try the Hora even if the boys didn’t want to!
Emily, Jeremiah and I shared a Singaporean game called five stones. Jeremiah and I used small beanbags, Emily just used pebbles!
Javier and Kayla shared about Taiwan. Javier shared about the Taiwanese scout logo, Kayla about landmarks. They shared about Taiwan because our next activity was a meet-up with some Taiwanese Scouts at Gardens By the Bay.
Jayson and Glenn shared about an American game called Capture the flag. You need to have two teams to play this game. First, you divide your playing space in half. Then, each team hides their “flag” on their side of the playing space and decides where their “jail” is, then, you start the game. Each player tries to get the opposite teams flag. If you get tagged on the opposite side of the playing space, you go to jail. You can try to tag players from the other team that are on your side of the playing space. If someone tags someone on their team that is in jail, everyone in that jail can run away. The first team to get the other team’s flag to their side of the playing space wins. We played this game and it was hard because it was not clear which way the field was divided. Nobody won in the end.
Jedediah shared about a Singaporean game called Chatek. This is a one player game. The player has to kick the chapteh to keep it off the ground as long as he can. I did not play it myself but I heard Kynan got 10 kicks in a row!
Kynan shared books in African language. Kynan’s mum is from South Africa. Kynan read the books in African and his mum (Auntie El) translated so we could understand.
We also learnt about the National flag, and our Scout flag, and participated in a flag-raising ceremony using a flag pole set up by the older cubs. We also learnt how to fold the flag.
I enjoyed Leanne’s presentation most in this meeting. We had fun too playing capture the flag.
