Heritage Trail 17 August

Heritage Trail at Fort Canning

Event: 17 August 2014

Written by: Joshua YIP

On 17 August 2014, it was a humid and warm Sunday. All of us gathered at Fort

Canning Park at 3pm. Most people were on time. I can’t wait for the race to start.

First, we lined up in our SIX at Fort Gate. Then, Uncle Kelvin and Zoya led

the Grand Howl. Then, my dad, Uncle Benny did the briefing. After we got the first

clue, we set off to where our clue asked us to go.

It was an Amazing Race with “Minute-to-Win-It” games

Everyone had to help to solve the riddles. Every stationmaster would tell us about Fort Canning
history and we have to write down in our worksheet. Then, the challenge would begin. I liked the “Junk In the Trunk” game the most.

My team, Stingray, came in First!

The second prize went to Snowy Owl...

 and Third was Otter.

I learned about the history of Fort Canning and the history of world war two in Singapore. It was very fun with the worksheets and challenges together!

Scouting can be very interesting and fun.

Fireworks Hike

Fireworks Hike

Date: 26th Jul 2014

Today's event was the Fireworks Hike. We met at Kallang MRT at 3pm. There was a new

boy who joined us for the hike. His name is Yang Pang. When we started out, the weather

was hot and stayed the same until evening.

I was eager to go faster because I felt energetic. On our way, the path which we were

walking on was blocked by some construction. As such, we had to cross to the other side

of the road. We also passed by the new Sports Hub at Kallang. The Sports Hub looks big

while I look tiny, standing beside it. We stopped there to take a water break and took some

group photos. We also passed by Gardens by the Bay East and the younger cubs joined

us from there. We stopped to rest at Marina Barrage. Two teenage girls asked whether we

could take some photographs with them. They also gave some mini Singapore flags to us.

We then walked on to the Helix Bridge and settled at the sitting space which some of the

scouts leaders have reserved for us. After the dinner at Helix Bridge near the Art Science

Museum, we played charades. Charades is basically acting out an action/ animal or thing

without saying a word, for other people to guess. The action of the last card was running

late. Uncle Benny was the one to act it out for us to guess. Just after our game, the people

holding parachutes jumped out from helicopters and appeared from the sky. I thought

they were going to crash into the big National Day Parade screen but they landed safely.

This was followed by a ship that sailed out with two boats following closely behind. The

ship stopped and got ready for the 21 gun salute. I felt that the gun salute was very loud.

One of the boats sailed past us. A friendly officer on the boat waved to us and we happily

waved back.

The fireworks started at 805pm. Some of the fireworks display was that of smiley faces.

The pyrotechnics display had plenty of colourful lights being shot into the sky. I felt that

the fireworks display was more than what I expected. When I was looking at the fireworks,

I didnt expect that there would be any display of smiley faces. To my delight, the display

patterns were magical. When the fireworks ended, Auntie Rebecca gave us some glow

in the dark sticks to keep. We went home after the fireworks display. I felt very happy as I

have hiked more than the expected 7km. We actually hiked 8.5km! I was tired but satisfied

that it was a memorable hike.

I hope the people in charge of the National Day Parade will do a good job on the actual

National Day. I also wish that we will have more of such hikes in future as I have enjoyed

myself thoroughly.

6 July 2014: Condition Hike

The Condition Hike to Sentosa Island
Date: 6 July 2014
Written By:    Olivia YIP

It was a cloudy day. We gathered at Harborfront ticketing counter. It looked like it was going to rain and some adults joked about ending up hiking in the nearby mall. Soon after, everybody arrived. We grouped into our sixes and filed out of the train station, Six Wolverines in the lead!
We walked out into the busy city along the road. We were all excited about the hike. The monorail to Sentosa was right above us. We walked along the heavy trafficked roads for a while, heading towards the boardwalk that led to the island of Sentosa. Once we reached the boardwalk, the strong breeze coming from the sea hit us. Before that, it felt hot and stuffy. The breeze was a wonderful feeling. We were off for a wonderful start!
The boardwalk seemed to last forever, stretching out along the sea. I kind of secretly wished it would never end. The scenery was breathtaking.
Finally, it ended. We finished a quarter of the walk by then. We had arrived at Sentosa Island!
We passed by the Merlion and Universal Studio. We took some group pictures…just like the tourists. We walked pass more roads and spotted peacocks on the way. Then we picked up the younger cubs that were too young to walk the whole distance. They were so eager to finally join in the hike. We walked up hill for a bit, then down hill for a bit. Our legs were kind of sore by then.
Then the hike finally ended. It was 3 hours later. We were all tired by the time we arrived. We all sat down on the floor having our well-deserved snacks when the leaders broke the news to us that we had completed more than we expected. All the Cubs were so happy and proud of themselves! We finished about 7.4 kilometers. Altogether it was a wonderful hike.

Now, we were all ready for the FIREWORK HIKE that will take place 2 weeks later.
